University Barclaycard Holders - Payments Services Directive 2

Further to the communication in Bulletin 777 on 1st July 2019

We are awaiting confirmation from Barclaycard but it is very likely we will receive new cards for the majority of cardholders at the end of July / beginning of August.  We will work with departments to arrange for the most appropriate method to distribute the cards to cardholders. Please note that the expiry date for the new card will be the same as the existing card.

PSD2 is a new piece of EU legislation. It aims to make online and contactless credit / debit card transactions more secure and applies to all banks and businesses.

From mid-September 2019, whenever you use your Barclaycard online to make a purchase there will be an additional check to confirm that it is a valid transaction. This process is called Strong Customer Authentication, or SCA.

This extra check can be one of the following:

• something you know – like a password or a PIN
• something you have – like a phone or PIN sentry card reader.

If you use your card for contactless transactions, you may be asked to enter your PIN even if the value of the transaction is less than £30.00. The reason for this is because after the completion of 5 contactless transactions in succession, PIN verification of the next transaction is likely to be required.

New Travel Insurance portal available from 16th July

As previously notified Chubb will take over from RSA as the University’s travel insurance provider with effect from 1st August 2019. The level of coverage provided will be very similar to that provided currently by RSA and more details are available from the Insurance website.  The new portal for declaring trips to Chubb will be available from 16th July via the Insurance website at https://www.insurance.admin.cam.ac.uk/travel-insurance/application-process

During the transition period trips will be covered as follows:

  • All trips finishing on or before 31 July are covered by RSA under the existing policy.

  • All trips starting on or after 1 August will be covered by Chubb.

  • Trips starting before 1 August and finishing on or before 31 August will be covered by RSA as an extension of the existing policy.

  • Trips starting before 1 August and finishing on or after 1 September will be automatically migrated from RSA to Chubb on 1 August.

Travellers do not need to re-register already declared trips. The migration will be done automatically by the University Insurance Section and Chubb. Chubb will notify travellers of the changes. There is no special action required on travellers’ behalf.  RSA trips should be declared on the University’s systems as usual, at https://www.insurance.admin.cam.ac.uk/travel-insurance/application-process.

The new portal can be used for both employees and graduate students and includes a number of additional features over the previous online forms . Travellers will no longer need to contact the University’s Insurance Team if they:

  • Will be travelling for more than 90 days (trips up to 18 months are covered);

  • Need to add details of accompanying family members (employees only);

  • Require a VISA application support letter;

  • Want to edit the details of a logged trip.

Further information and updated FAQs are all available via the Insurance website.
